Tenerife kicks off the national calendar at Abama Resort Tenerife with two tournaments

The Abama Tennis Academy is set to once again host world-class professional tennis as it hosts the ATP Challenger Tour for two consecutive weeks. From 2 to 16 February, the prestigious venue in southern Tenerife, featuring 6 tennis courts and a centre court that can accommodate 600 spectators, will welcome back elite competition with two ATP Challenger 75 tournaments.

As it kicks off the national calendar, Tenerife once again finds itself at the global epicentre of this category on the courts of Abama Tennis, with elite professionals bringing their best game as they compete for the trophies. Undoubtedly, a powerful incentive for fans to visit Tenerife this winter. There is also more prize money to be won in 2025, with $100,000 up for grabs in each competition, an added incentive that will enhance the tournament’s prestige and attract a larger pool of players to these ATP events.

MEF Tennis Events have confirmed that they will once again host the tournament at Abama Resort, a venue that has introduced numerous rising stars to the global circuit and is highly regarded by athletes. Professional players appreciate the resort’s exceptional climate, prime location, outstanding organisation, and world class facilities.

For the first time ever, MEF and the Canary Islands Tennis Federation have signed an agreement to extend invitations to the best tennis players on the islands to participate in the tournaments. In addition, all members of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation and players from clubs on the archipelago will enjoy a 50% discount on tickets and weekly passes. There will also be Kids Days for the youngest players.

Enthusiasm at the Canary Islands Tennis Federation

Following the 12 ATP Challenger tournaments and 1 WTA 250 hosted by Abama Tennis - the latter chosen as the best world tournament in its category in 2021 - the close alliance between MEF Tennis Events and the Canary Islands archipelago remains strong. The Canary Islands Tennis Federation could not be more pleased. As its president, Jesús Sepúlveda, points out: “The initiative led by Marcello Marchesini not only benefits the players on the court, but also the many fans who have attended here in Tenerife and in Gran Canaria. I’d also like to highlight the great players who have competed on these courts, players like Brandon Nakashima, who made it back into the world Top 50 after winning here”. With great satisfaction and pride, Sepúlveda also underscored the importance of the agreement for the ‘wild cards’: “In 2025, some young people will have the opportunity to experience just what a Challenger circuit is by participating in it. This experience will be open to young players who’ve already proven themselves at the national and international level; it will be a privilege for them”.

Regarding the Federation’s current situation, Jesús Sepúlveda explains that “the data show that we are on the right track. There is a long-standing tradition of professional tennis in the Canary, with players like David Marrero and Carla Suárez. I believe that the conditions are right for new players to reach the highest levels of the ATP and WTA circuits”. The tournaments will take place once again this year at Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, a venue that is renowned not only for its high-performance tennis courts but also for the exceptional hospitality of Las Terrazas de Abama Suites and Los Jardines de Abama Suites. The area boasts exquisite gastronomy, a shopping centre with a wide range of dining, wellness, and leisure options, an outdoor Kids Camp, and the prestigious golf course designed by Dave Thomas, making it an increasingly popular venue among ATP players.

MEF Tennis Events Return to Tenerife

In late 2020, at the height of the Covid pandemic, MEF Tennis undertook a project that might have seemed crazy at the time: to bring world-class tennis to the Canary Islands! According to Marcello Marchesini, “Five years on, I can proudly say that it was the right decision. Thanks to the support of the local authorities, in particular, Tenerife Tourism Turismo and the Government of the Canary Islands, over the last five years we have organised 12 ATP Challenger tournaments on the archipelago and a WTA 25, winner of the award for the best tournament in the world in its category. Our main objectives now are, first and foremost, to assist the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), and in particular the Canary Islands Tennis Federation (FCT), to rapidly develop local talent. Inviting young players to participate in these tournaments, gives them a chance to take their first steps in professional tennis. Finally, we aim to showcase the incredible opportunities for nature and leisure tourism in Tenerife at all the tournaments that will be taking place in Italy in 2025, further promoting a destination that is so close to our hearts.
