The pandemic caused a sizable number of Spaniards to take up yoga in masse, adopting the best anti-stress tool against the anxiety produced by a quarantine with no guarantees and huge uncertainty for millions of people in our country. And if there is one person who activated this defence mechanism, without a doubt it was Xuan Lan, the French instructor of Vietnamese origin who became popular following her appearance on Operación Triunfo. And her live solidarity videos cheered and helped the population to reconnect with body and mind.

Now, following an intense year in which her popularity skyrocketed – tripling her number of followers on YouTube, now totalling more than 1,400,000 subscribers – Xuan Lan, who graced the cover of Forbes this February, sought out a little peace on the island of Tenerife, spending two weeks relaxing and getting away at the five-star Las Terrazas de Abama Suites hotel.

Fine weather, national parks and nature reserves with climbing and hiking trails, being able to enjoy the sea on uncrowded beaches, and a wide range of experiences and excursions are a few of the things that won her over about the island, and especially this corner of Guía de Isora: Abama Resort Tenerife.

But for Xuan Lan's personality, leisure is always linked to work, which she enjoys tremendously. This is why during her stay at Las Terrazas, the private residential resort managed by My Way Meaningful Hotels became a natural set on which to record a four-episode series focusing on Fit+Yoga. It will debut shortly on Studio Online, a platform akin to Netflix which has just launched with exclusive yoga and wellness content in Spanish.

Las Terrazas de Abama is an ideal place to do yoga because it has space and is away from the road; there’s hardly any noise. I think anyone can find their ideal spot here to meditate and do yoga. You have an ideal climate, gardens, terraces, several pools, lots of space in the apartments, both inside and out … and the surroundings and vicinity are also suitable,’ she states. Her Tenerife calendar also had room for Abama Wellness Week, organized by Las Terrazas de Abama and Abama Luxury Residences for resort guests and owners.

Xuan Lan’s success is no chance, it is the result of the rigours of her Asian upbringing and advanced academic and professional education. After earning her economics degree at Université Paris Dauphine, she moved to New York, where she spent two years working for a French marketing and event organization firm. She then switched to an American firm that managed a social network. But when the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, she and her partner decided to move to Europe and settle in Barcelona.

While in New York, the Parisian had started doing yoga as a hobby, but in Barcelona she began to practise more intensely and became an instructor. Xuan Lan sensed that there was a market niche in the Spanish and Latin American media segment for yoga. In the ten years she has devoted herself to this discipline full-time, she was a pioneer in offering online classes, participating in mass events; she has been an instructor on Operación Triunfo and has written two books; but what really caused her popularity to take off was the solidarity movement during the lockdown, with her free meditation and yoga classes.

‘Social media gives you direct, immediate and instantaneous feedback. At the time, I received, and I continue to receive, loads of messages about how yoga helped people during that period. It brought families together and helped many people care for their mental and physical health,’ she pointed out.

Now she works with a 12-person team to drive her new project, Studio Online, a pay platform with a mobile app offering more than 400 videos of series, guides, classes, workshops, interviews and exclusive content. ‘There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes production, location, content generation, client management and technical work. We have committed to talent and hiring a permanent team. In this situation, we didn't want to increase labour instability,’ she highlights.
