Abama Hotels hosts a new edition of the Great Hotel Debate

The importance of hotel and social sustainability, competitiveness, increased costs and problems to recruit and retain employees and talent were some of the subjects discussed this week in the Great Hotel Debate organised by Grupo Vía on the Island of Tenerife, an event held at Abama Garden, the new multifunctional open air space adjoining Las Terrazas de Abama Suites, with professionals of renown from the tourism sector.

Under the title "Tenerife, a meeting point for European tourism”, the event was introduced by Jorge Monje, Operations Director of My Way Hotels & Resorts, the hotel manager of Abama Hotels, in a debate moderated by Carlos Díez de la Lastra, CEO of Les Roches Global, one of the four most important hospitality schools in the world.

With regard to the rise in rates in the hotel sector, Adrián Almirante, Managing Director of Las Terrazas de Abama Suites and Jardines de Abama Suites, explained that it is evident that inflation is affecting the tourism and travel lector, and due to this the industry reacts by raising prices, although he also stated that this is being done to a lesser extent than in other sectors. “Even so, if hotel rates arise due to inflation (and it is inevitable) this must be legitimised by improving the product and service provided by our establishments, the restaurants, our offer of experiences... We cannot justify that we are more expensive just because costs have risen, or we shall cease to be competitive”, he stated.

Hotel prices have undergone an average increase of 7%, energy costs have increased nearly 30%, utilities are 17% more expensive and labour costs have risen nearly 9%, according to the figures given at this professional encounter, in which other participants were Gustavo Escobar, Managing Director of the Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden, Jordi Estalella, Marketing and Sales Director of Dreamplace Hotels & Resorts, Maurice Damen, Canary Islands Sales Director of RIU Hotels & Resorts, Victoria López, President of the Fedola Group and Vice-President of Ashotel, and David Pérez, CEO of Tenerife Tourism.

With new generations of tourists who have integrated environmental values in their buying processes, and the growing concern over caring for the environment, sustainability has been consolidated as one of the fundamental pillars of the sector. During the debate, everybody agreed over this point and explained the major importance of the Archipelago working on global sustainability, not only environmental, but also social, avoiding the saturation and gentrification that have taken place at other destinations such as Barcelona or the Balearic Islands.

The participants agreed that experience tourism must be encouraged, considering the decadence of beach tourism. In that sense, Adrián Almirante argued that “travellers are no longer content with beach tourism; they want to have stories to tell ... and beach stories are not worth telling. As hotel managers, we must generate unique experiences and our luck, here in Tenerife, is that we have an environment that offers this naturally. We must encourage travellers to get to know the least visited parts of the island, so the whole flow is more distributed”, he emphasised.

Difficulty to recruit staff

The difficulty to obtain labour in the sector, absenteeism and major workplace churn, were other major issues discussed during the Great Hotel Debate. Other factors have influenced this, such as the change in lifestyle among the new generations, the scarcity of residential accommodation at the tourist destinations and the collapse of transport at peak hours.

Wanting to work, commitment, vocation and workplace environments, are factors that must be worked on to attract youths, according to Adrián Almirante, who explained that forming community and bonds with the employees is important to maintain a stable staff: “Our responsibility is to make people want to work in hospitality again, to attract new talent and to offer good labour conditions”, he argued.

The Great Hotel Debate, organised by Grupo Vía, was sponsored by Abama Resort Tenerife, Abama Hotels, Saxun, Commtech and Les Roches Global.
