Marc López, Nadal’s coach, in Abama Tennis: “Now I’m sitting on the bleachers enjoying a new phase"

The recently retired tennis player from Barcelona visited the courts of Abama Tennis in Tenerife to play a match with the French tennis legend Henri Leconte, as part of the activities organized during the Owners Cup, a golf tournament for the community of owners of this exclusive destination of Guía de Isora.

The tennis player from Barcelona, Marc López, participated at the beginning of October in a friendly tennis match against the French star Henri Leconte on one of the courts of Abama Tennis. This exhibition between two great professional tennis players is part of the programme of activities of the Owners Cup 2022, centred around this year’s theme ‘Back to the Roots’.

Marc López is an Olympic medallist and former world No. 3 in doubles, and his record of achievements encompasses fourteen doubles titles in ATP competitions, including a Roland Garros Grand Slam, which he won with his partner Feliciano López in 2016. Feliciano competed on these same courts last year during the Tenerife Challenger. “He told me the place was spectacular, and today I can see it for myself. I’m coming back to enjoy with my family”, said the Catalan, who stayed at Las Terrazas de Abama Suites during the event.

López is already involved in two new projects: he has joined Rafael Nadal’s technical coaching team, another great friend of his, and he is also coaching Marc Schulz, a twelve-year old with a promising future and who will soon be competing in Canarias, “although it is still too early to tell. What really counts is that he enjoys the sport and is happy.”

This year, he hung up his rackets after his last match partnered with the tennis revelation Carlos Alcaraz. “I had planned this two years ago. I’m 40 years old and I have a one-year-old daughter. I’ve been playing professional tennis since I was 17. The decision to leave my life’s passion was not an easy one, but now my coaching career is beginning, and I can devote more time to my baby girl,” he explains.

At the moment, he is more focused on the present than the future: “What matters now is working alongside Rafa, who just became a father, during the remaining years of his career, which I hope are many. Afterwards, I know I will continue to be linked to the sport because it is what I understand and what I’m good at.” He travels with Rafa Nadal a large part of the year for his competitions, something that he makes compatible with Marc Schulz’s training, whom he is very excited to accompany in his first steps “because it means shaping a tennis player from scratch, which is totally different from what I do in Nadal’s coaching team with Carlos Moyá and Francis Roig.” Perhaps his experience and know-how will guide the young player to becoming a tennis star and continue positioning Spain as an international reference in this sport.
