Tenerife once again becomes one of the great international cycling destinations with the celebration of the IX Vuelta Ciclista Isla de Tenerife “Vuelta al Teide”, one of the most important cycling events in the Canary Islands. On Saturday 16 May, hundreds of cyclists will ride through some of the island’s most spectacular landscapes in a day where sport, nature, and personal challenge come together around Spain’s highest peak: El Teide.
Consolidated as an essential event in the international cycling calendar and recognized by the UCI, this race attracts participants from all over the world every year, who find in Tenerife the perfect setting to enjoy cycling throughout the year.
A benchmark cycling event in the Canary Islands
The Vuelta al Teide has become much more than a sporting competition. Its combination of physical demand, volcanic landscapes, and privileged climate has positioned Tenerife as one of the top destinations for cycle tourism in Europe.
In this 2026 edition, the race will feature 1,000 registered cyclists from 32 different nationalities, confirming the strong international reach of the event. In addition, around 70% of participants will come from outside the island, reinforcing Tenerife’s role as a leading sports destination.
The event will cover a total of 13 municipalities in northern and southern Tenerife, crossing some of the island’s most impressive landscapes, from mountain roads to coastal areas with Atlantic views.
Three routes to enjoy cycling in Tenerife
The Vuelta al Teide offers different modalities adapted to various levels and goals, allowing both experienced cyclists and amateurs to enjoy the experience.
The most demanding option is the Gran Fondo, starting and finishing in Puerto de la Cruz. Its 182 kilometers and 4,600 meters of positive elevation make this route one of the greatest cycling challenges in the Canary Islands. The route crosses Teide National Park and Parque Rural de Teno, offering unique volcanic landscapes and spectacular Atlantic views.
Meanwhile, the Medio Fondo, starting from Santiago del Teide, offers an 86-kilometer route with 1,700 meters of elevation gain, ideal for those seeking an intense but more accessible experience.
Finally, the Fondo Corto will start in Buenavista del Norte and features a 64-kilometer route with 1,300 meters of elevation gain, a perfect option to enjoy the atmosphere of the event and the roads of Tenerife.
El Teide: a unique setting for cycling
One of the main attractions of this event is its natural environment. Cycling around El Teide means crossing some of the most impressive landscapes in Spain, where volcanic lava, Canary pine forests, and winding roads create an unforgettable visual experience.
Parque Nacional del Teide, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has become a regular training ground for professional cyclists from around the world thanks to its elevation, altitude, and stable year-round weather conditions.
Tenerife’s average annual temperature, especially in the south of the island, allows cycling almost any month of the year, making the destination a true paradise for those seeking active holidays in the Canary Islands.
