This two-year initiative gets underway with pieces by Rima Ciplyte, Gloria Brito, Sofía de Tomás and Borgia Bangull, some of whose work has already sold

The Tenerife District Council – through its Youth and Education Area – and Abama Hotels have already unveiled the first Abama Gallery by Merkarte exhibition, which will be open to the public for four months. The aim of this project is to highlight, promote and empower young creators on the island. Participating in the first edition are Lithuanian artist Rima Ciplyte; visual artist Gloria Brito de Heer; plastic artist Sofía de Tomás Ascanio; and sculptor Borgia Bangull.

This joint initiative of the Council and Abama Hotels is part of an agreement between the two bodies which will include six editions of Merkarte, with the artists changing every four months. Each edition will feature workshops by artists residing on Tenerife, covering topics such as maritime watercolours, botanicals, creative ceramics, traditional pottery, collage, and oil portraits, among others.

The first two pieces at MERKARTE – by artist Rima Ciplyte and sculptor Borgia Bangull – were purchased by Abama Luxury Residences and recently raffled off at the Owners Cup Blue Ocean Gala, held annually by the resort for the destination’s residential owners. The pieces were chosen for their manageable size, to allow the owners (most of whom are from abroad) to easily transport them to their home country. The artists attended the gala, presenting the prize to the winners at an event which gathered together almost two hundred people. The first work, Prickly by Ciplyte, is acrylic on canvas; and the sculpture by Bangull, titled The False Guide, is black refractory potter’s clay, a modelling clay designed for artistic ceramics.

Abama Gallery is a newly created space on Plaza Abama. It was designed to facilitate a fluid connection between Abama Resort Tenerife and the art world: a space intended for both local Canary Islands artists and in the future, national and international artists. When a piece is purchased, it is replaced by another similar work which integrates with the rest of the show on display at the Abama Resort Tenerife facility.

Merkarte is an educational, artistic and social programme organized by the Tenerife District Council. In 2024, the project will celebrate 20 years of working to highlight, promote and empower the island’s young creators, supporting them in establishing a professional career and entering the job market. It also features a programme of educational activities, exhibitions, and social and labour support, demonstrating its commitment to youth and local talent in collaboration with the tourism industry and other private stakeholders.

Jorge Monje, chief operating officer for Abama Hotels, has shared that the entire team is extremely excited about the talent, passion and creativity on display at Abama Resort Tenerife. ‘Our firm opens itself to the community with initiatives of this kind, which bring together culture, youth and tourism. We are extremely grateful to the District Council for its trust and partnership.’

As Tenerife District Council Youth Minister Serafín Mesa explains, the Merkarte Tourism and Young Talent initiative seeks to boost employment and self-employment among young creators at tourism companies and related industries, generating demand and synergies. It also utilizes and incorporates the creativity of our local talent, beauty and sustainability as distinguishing and qualifying elements of the island's economic drivers.
